Setup conky

Conky is a free, light-weight system monitor for X, that displays any information on your desktop. Conky is licensed under the GPL and runs on Linux and BSD.

http://conky.sourceforge.net/

To install conky just open the terminal end type

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install conky

Now that you have conky in installed you can start it to see if it works

conky

It should start, but the default conky is pretty ugly. So to get a better conky navigate to your home folder and create a new conky config

cd $home

gedit .conkyrc

Now you can write your own conky config
